Der Frühling kommt, und vielleicht habt ihr Lust auf einen Ausflug? Ich empfehle euch, mal einen Ausflug ins hessische Büdingen zu machen. Das hat nicht nur eine wunderschöne historische Altstadt, sondern auch ein ganz tolles 50er Jahre Museum. Das Museum liegt direkt am Marktplatz und zeigt Lebensgefühl und Wohnkultur der 50er Jahre. Obwohl bei mir leichte Neidgefühlen (vor allem bei den Möbeln …) aufkamen, macht das Museum jedoch auch die nicht ganz so schönen Seiten der Fünfziger – so wird einem im Jugendzimmer ganz schnell klar, wie beengt die Wohnverhältnisse oft waren. Gelegentlich gibt es auch Veranstaltungen, so am 12. März eine Hommage an Caterina Valente und Silvio Francesco.

Springtime is coming – for those of you who are looking for an interesting day trip from Frankfurt, I sincerely recommend a visit in Büdingen. Apart from its lovely historical town centre, Büdingen is home to the 50er Jahre Museum, dedicated to 1950s lifestyle and home decor. Even though I really got jealous looking at some of the furniture, the museum gives a realistic picture of the times – standing in the teenager’s room, you can really feel how cramped living conditions were at that time. At 4 EUR entrance fee for adults, the museum is a great place for taking a trip back in time. They also have special events from time to time – on March 12, a tribute to Caterina Valente, one of Germany’s “Schlager” idols of the 1950s.

Keine Lust auf langweilige Rauhfaser oder ach-so-coole Wand-Tattoos? Bei Johnny Tapete gibt’s original Tapeten der 50er, 60er und 70er Jahre. Weil es sich tatsächlich um Restposten alter Tapeten handelt, reichen die Mengen vermutlich nicht für einen Ballsaal – aber für eine schöne, originale Retro-Wand dürfte es reichen.

Hätte ich damals im Handarbeitsunterricht bei Frau Grieb besser aufgepasst! Sie war allerdings genauso unsympathisch wie Griebenschmalz, so dass ich bis heute weder nähen, stricken noch häkeln kann. Schade, sonst könnte ich so schöne Dinge machen wie die Leute auf Sew Retro. Dort stellen Leute ihre frisch genähten Klamotten im Vintage Style vor – sehr schön. Die passenden Schnittmuster gibt’s z.B. im Vintage Patterns Wiki gratis zum Download. Vielleicht sollte ich doch mal einen Nähkurs in Angriff nehmen …

During my school days, I never paid much attention in needlework and sewing classes – might have been due to our teacher, Mrs. Grieb, who was a real horror. So, I can’t sew, knit or crochet. What a pity, because otherwise I could make beautiful things like the people on Sew Retro. In this blog, people show their homemade vintage style clothes, and everything looks great. Manchmal beneide ich die Briten. Nein, nicht um ihr Wetter, sondern um Veranstaltungen wie das Vintage at Goodwood Festival, das dieses Jahr zum ersten Mal stattfand. Drei Tage lang Musik, Mode und alles drumherum aus den letzten 5 Jahrzehnten. Wie diese Fotogalerie zeigt, scheint es eine spaßige und stilechte Sache gewesen zu sein – bis hin zum Tanztee, wo es keine Pappbecher, sondern Porzellantassen gab … Falls es das Festival nächstes Jahr noch gibt, würde ich gerne mal hinfahren. In einem Land, wo es Pencil Skirts im Supermarkt gibt (seufz), ist eben alles möglich …

Sometimes I really envy the British. Not because of the weather, but because of events like the Vintage at Goodwood Festival which took place for the first time this year. Three days of music, fashion and other cool stuff from the last 5 decades. As you can see in this photo gallery, it was a lot of fun and a very stylish event. They even had china cups instead of paper cups in the tea dance tent … I’d love to find out whether they’ll be having the festival again next year, would be great to see it. But after all, anything is possible in a country where they sell pencil skirts at the local supermarket – can anyone order one for me???

Sommerzeit ist Tiki-Zeit! Endlich macht es richtig Spaß, draußen zu sitzen und einen Cocktail zu schlürfen. Hier ein paar Tipps, wie das Tiki-Feeling auch bei euch aufkommt:

Früher hatte ich mehr Angst vor dem Friseur als vor dem Zahnarzt. Nach Erlebnissen mit selbsternannten Super-Stylisten, die “Spitzen schneiden” als Aufforderung zu einer Beinahe-Rasur verstanden oder mir gleich beim Betreten des Salons ein Trendfrisuren-Heft in die Hand drückten (“So musst du aussehen!”) war ich ein gebranntes Kind. Obwohl sich beim Blondieren hauptsächlich mein lieber Lebensgefährte die Finger verätzte.
Um so erfreuter war ich, als ich von einem Fifties-Friseur in Mainz hörte. Und tatsächlich, bei Debbie’s 59 fühle ich mich mit all meinen “unmodischen” Frisurwünschen hundertprozentig verstanden. Debbie zaubert aus meinen Schnittlauchhaaren wunderbare Lockenkreationen und einmal sogar eine stilechte Wasserwelle, die sogar ein Wochenende in Berlin überlebte. Zusätzlich gibt sie mir regelmäßig Tipps zur optimalen Haarpflege und zum Styling zu Hause (ich habe allerdings zwei ungelenke linke Händchen und bekomme das Ganze trotz Lockenwicklern und Haarnetz noch nicht hundertprozentig hin). Ein zusätzliches Plus ist der liebevoll eingerichtete Salon und die tolle Musik, die auch die längste Einwirkzeit unterhaltsam untermalt.
Trotz des Namens ist Debbies Laden nicht auf die Fifties beschränkt. Hier werden auch stilechte Renee- und Sixties-Cuts gezaubert, und die Herren können sich an der “Pomade Bar” mit der Schmiere ihres Vertrauens eindecken. Und das Allerschönste: Von aufgesetzer Szene-Attitüde ist hier nichts zu spüren. Einfach meine Friseurin des Vertrauens.

I was sick and tired of arrogant, self-proclaimed “top stylists” who didn’t listen to anything I had to say and told me how to look. Then I heard about a 1950s style salon in Mainz. And it’s fantastic – Debbie at Debbie’s 59 understands retro styling needs and manages to create amazing curls in my hair, such as an incredible water wave that survived a weekend in Berlin. She also gives out styling and haircare tips. Her retro-styled salon is a lovely place with great music. In spite of the name, Debbie isn’t restricted to 1950s hair – she also does great Sixties and Renee cuts and offers a “Pomade Bar” for gentlemen. But the nicest thing is the incredibly friendly atmosphere.

Leider läuft die US-Serie Mad Men, die in einer Werbeagentur der frühen 60er Jahre spielt, hierzulande erst in einiger Zeit auf ZDF neo, den ich nicht empfangen kann – grummel. Aber nicht verzagen, mit Mad Men Yourself kann man sich zumindest online in eine gut gekleidete Serienfigur verwandeln. Hier links seht ihr mein Ergebnis …
Das Motto “Be sleek, be stylish, be yourself” könnte auch als Motto für Peggy Sue Frankfurt herhalten 
Auf der US-amerikanischen Website gibt’s übrigens auch eine Fashion File speziell zu der in der Serie gezeigten Mode. Ja, ich will solche Outfits fürs Büro!

Unfortunately, the American TV series Mad Men about a 1960s ad agency will take a long time to reach Germany, and even then it will probably be shown on a TV channel most people (including me) can’t receive. However, at least online even we can turn into one of the stylish characters on the show – by using Mad Men Yourself. I like their motto “Be sleek, be stylish, be yourself”, which could also be a motto for this blog … On the US website, you can also find a Fashion File about the clothes on the show. Yes, I want to wear that to the office!
